![]() ![]() During the times in which the two composers lived, many perceived Beethoven to be shadowed by Mozart as Beethoven’s music was not traditionally aligned with the Classical Era. In terms of musical expertise, both excelled in their style of writing and it is only a matter of opinion which can determine the better musician. It is unclear whether Mozart and Beethoven ever met in person, however hearsay has it Mozart commented on Beethoven saying to, "Keep your eyes on him someday he will give the world something to talk about.” Sure enough, Beethoven gave the world something to talk about and produced several masterpieces such as Symphony no. Beethoven was assumed to have mild dyslexia and at the age of 10, he dropped out of school to study music full time. His father being a mediocre musician was enamored with the idea of Beethoven becoming a child prodigy, which is why Beethoven debuted for Empress Maria Theresa at the age of 6. Growing up, Beethoven did not have the happiest of childhoods as he was beat by his father to practice piano. Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany on December 16, 1770. Mozart died on December 5th, 1791 thought to have been poisoned, although it was later revealed he died of strep throat. The rivalry between Salieri and Mozart was heavily speculated, so much so that it was alleged Salieri poisoned Mozart to death. To avoid financial struggles, Mozart attempted to apply for court appointment, although was not accepted due to the court’s favoring towards Italian composers like Kapellmeister Antonio Salieri. Although Mozart’s compositions provided him a stable income, he and his wife, Constanze still struggled financially as they were keen on living a typical aristocratic European lifestyle. After being discontent with his job as assistant concertmaster, Mozart went on to write several operas including, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, and famously the Marriage of Figaro. Some of Mozart’s compositions which were modeled after Bach include Die Zauberflote and the finale of Symphony No. Along with his sister, Mozart set off on several European tours, most notably meeting Johann Christian Bach, (son of Johann Sebastian Bach), who had a sizeable influence on Mozart’s music. ![]() ![]() As the descendant of Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang was exposed to music from a very young age considering that his father was a successful composer and concertmaster violinist. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756. ![]() These two composers’ styles of writing can be attributed to their childhood experiences, as they grew up in different environments, one rich and one poor. Beethoven liked to incorporate an element of surprise, known for his trademarked use of subito piano, compared to Mozart who liked to make his music crisp and airy, giving his listeners a sense of completion. Whilst Beethoven was angsty and reserved, Mozart was the life of the party. Sure, both men made immense progress in music straddling the Classical and Romantic Era, yet both men had polar personalities which were reflected through their music. When we are asked to name some of the most influential classical composers in music history, prominent names such as Beethoven and Mozart are the first to come in mind. ![]()
